Frequently Asked Questions

Overnight Accommodation

Both overnight accommodation farm cottages are fully equipped and can sleep 10 in total. The beds are made as twins or together making a king-size bed as per your indication on the online booking form you complete. Bedding, blankets, bath towels, soap, washing up liquid, toilet paper, drying up cloths and complimentary tea/coffee/sugar are available. There is also a coffee bodum at each overnight.

Power

The first overnight cottage is run on solar power (no hairdryers etc. are allowed to be used please) and the second night is run on Eskom.

Signal & wifi

There is wifi at both overnight cottages. The first overnight unit has limited cell signal and the second night has fairly good signal (Vodacom is better than MTN).

The weather

The most accurate weather forecast for the trail is found here. Simply search Grootbos, Overberg District Municipality.

The trail operates regardless of wind and rain. There are indoor fireplaces at both overnight cottages with plenty of wood to use, to warm up at a fire. Feel free to pack extra clothes and shoes should the weather not look great.

Portage

The Fynbos Trail is a slackpacking trail, so you only need to carry your day pack with you. We will transfer all your luggage, food etc. and put anything in the fridge for you ahead of your arrival at the overnight cottages. We do not have a size/luggage limit. However, we only have one person and one bakkie to transport the luggage, so we ask that you please do not overload us.

Water

We suggest that you fill your water bottles before you arrive. There is a 25 litre drinking water container at both overnight cottages that you can use to refill for the following day’s hike.

Timing
“When should I arrive for my hike, and at what time do I depart afterwards?”

No two people hike the same. We encourage our hikers to enjoy the trail at a comfortable, enjoyable pace to make the most of your #fynbosadventure. But we also realise that time estimates are helpful for planning ahead and making travel arrangements.

Our hikers typically hit the trail at 2pm on the first day (although our budget & standard options could start earlier if they choose to do so). We recommend allowing enough time for unforeseen events and final preparations before starting.

On the final day, you’ll usually be back at your car by around 1pm – depending on your walking pace and whether you decide to tackle the summit. Premium hikers follow a slightly different route and enjoy a picnic lunch at Grootbos Foundation followed by a guided tour of the beautiful Grootbos Florilegium, which is well worth a few extra hours. Plan to leave around 3pm.

If you have questions or concerns about hiking time, our friendly office manager, Leigh, will be happy to assist – just send an email to info@fynbostrail.co.za.
